If you're going to West End, Roatan, do yourself a favour and stay at Mariposa Lodge. Why? Well, because:
* It's beautiful. A picturesque three-storey wooden house set back from the beach, each with a wide verandah, perfect for hammock-dwelling. There are additional single-storey apartments, also with their own outside porch and hammocks.
* It's beautifully maintained: The rooms are neat as a pin, with flyscreens that - wait for it - have no holes! Your room is serviced every day, and your drinking water is replaced as needed.
* It's brilliantly equipped: Each room has a kitchenette (fridge, stove top, microwave, drip coffee machine, and pots and utensils), so you can whip up your own sauteed lobster to scoff in your hammock. It's not only infinitely better than eating at the local restaurants, it's also infinitely cheaper. Rooms also have a TV and DVD player, to watch the more than 500 films available from the office. There's also a book exchange and magazine rack.
* It's incredible value for money. Roatan is expensive; Mariposa takes the sting out of that with its more than reasonable rates (with deals for stays of five days or more), and the kitchenette - a great feature when you know that you'll have to pay $5 for your morning pancake in restaurants.
I know this reads like I'm one of the owners, but honestly I'm just a recent guest delighted to have found people who actually care about their property. After five months travelling in South and Central America, it makes a very, very nice change.

Thank you for all your warm and friendly help and advice. I enjoyed my stay at the lodge immensely. After a few days working in a clinic in Tegucigalpa. I came back to Roatan for another week and did some more diving, exploring with my wife Crystell. We came by twice to see if you were around but came at the wrong time. We stayed a Cocolobo which was also fun. Will no doublt be back and I hope to see you again and Mike if he really exists.

Just wanted to write a quick (though overdue!) thank-you for an absolutely lovely stay in the mariposa pequena! my boyfriend luke and I stayed for a couple nights the first week of january and loved it. how lovely to have our own kitchen, a quiet (save for the roosters!) and beautiful green outdoor space, and the support of such a caring, conscientious staff. your attention to detail and high standards of cleanliness and safety were truly appreciated. I had a blast cooking in the evenings and meeting other young couples after a long day of scuba certification over at ocean connections. My time on roatan was definitely a highlight of my central american getaway and I want to again thank you!
Hope you are doing well...will definitely stop by if i find myself on roatan again...

Mariposa Lodge
Overlooking gardens bursting with tropical life, the chilled-out Mariposa stands above the other Roatán lodgings - literally and metaphorically. A shift upscale has taken it beyond the grasp of serious shoe-stringers but a stay here lightens the spirits more than the wallet. The fantastic ocean views from the clapboard house only go part of the way to explaining the Mariposa Lodge's enduring popularity.
The peace and quiet helps - if the West End hubbub isn't lost in the distance, it gets muffled by the garden flora. Then there's the Zen-like island tranquility, nurtured by the Canadian owners who set up the lodge to give divers a restful, well-priced place to crash. A book swap and DVD exchange offers ways of winding down after a day under the waves. There are two main types of accommodations, the house apartments and a newer cottage at the front. Go for the main house if you can - the higher, the better. Lodging at the front of the property is pristine (not flashy), but the bathroom and kitchen are shared. You've got slim chance of landing a room if you turn up out of the blue - whether West End is busy or not.
